Gem rp x editor5/26/2023 ![]() Furthermore, I bought it from two piano doctoral students who are moving because they got jobs as pianists (one with a real orchestra) - if it's good enough for them, it's about three orders of magnitude better than I need ![]() As others have said, we can generally get used to any good action, and I decided the GEM's is certainly good enough. Many reviewers, both on this forum and elsewhere, have stated that the GEM is a perfectly adequate substitute for a grand when a grand is impractical. Furthermore, the 550 was the bottom of the CA line and the better pianos of that era (CA970, 10) have different actions (CA550 has AWA II, the others have AWA Grand III and AWA Grand PRO, (which is what the CA5/7/9 have)) this further led me to believe that the 550 did not have the action I really like (I couldn't try the 550 easily because the seller has it in storage) ![]() As I researched the pianos, I found that AWA was introduced about the same time as the 550, so the 550 has first- or at best second-generation AWA. Although I very much like the newer AWA action (I've tried the CA5/7/9), I suspect the 550's is not as good. Although I may just be looking to justify my decision, my thinking went as follows: Thank you for your thoughts but I have now bought the GEM.
